The UAE is the outlier among medical travel destinations: savings against UK private rates are modest, typically 25 to 40 per cent, and it is the only major destination where many patients are travelling a short distance rather than a long one.
What it offers is Western-standard regulation, no language barrier for Gulf patients, world-class facilities and — for GCC residents — treatment close to home without a long-haul flight. For UK and European patients it is more often chosen for specific expertise than for price.

Healthcare standards and regulation
Healthcare is regulated emirate by emirate — the Dubai Health Authority in Dubai, the Department of Health in Abu Dhabi, and MOHAP federally. Licensing of both facilities and individual practitioners is strict, and credentials can be checked on the regulators' own registers, which is unusual and genuinely useful.
Accreditation
JCI accreditation is common among the larger hospitals, alongside mandatory local licensing. Because practitioner licensing is publicly verifiable, the UAE is one of the few destinations where you can independently confirm an individual surgeon's credentials before travelling.

Safety and what to weigh
Regulatory oversight is the UAE's real advantage. Facility and practitioner licensing is enforced, and you can verify a doctor's licence yourself before committing — something that is difficult or impossible in most destinations.
The honest caveat is value. If price is your primary driver, the UAE will rarely be the answer: savings are modest and living costs during recovery are high. It makes most sense for Gulf residents avoiding a long flight, or for patients seeking a specific expertise in a tightly regulated environment.

Why are savings smaller here?
Costs, salaries and facility overheads are much closer to European levels. You are paying for regulation, proximity and infrastructure rather than a large price gap.
Can I check a doctor's credentials?
Yes, and this is a genuine differentiator. DHA and DoH maintain searchable registers of licensed practitioners. Use them.
Is it a good option for UK patients?
Sometimes — usually for specific expertise or where a short flight matters clinically. For pure cost saving, Turkey, Poland or India will beat it substantially.
What about summer treatment?
Avoid June to September if you can. Temperatures above 45°C make recovery and mobility genuinely difficult, and outdoor time is impossible.
Is health insurance accepted?
Some international policies have UAE networks, which is unusual among medical travel destinations. Check with your insurer before assuming self-pay.
