Accreditation
Spanish clinics operate primarily inside EU and national regulation; JCI is held by some larger private hospital groups. For fertility specifically, clinics are authorised and inspected by the national registry, and the Spanish Fertility Society publishes outcome data — a more useful check than an accreditation badge.

Safety and what to weigh
Spain is among the lowest-risk destinations in medical travel: EU regulation, verifiable professional registration, published fertility outcome data and a two-hour flight home. If something needs correcting, returning is cheap and straightforward — which is worth more than it sounds.
The trade-off is price. Spain will rarely beat Turkey, Hungary or India on cost. Where it wins is fertility, where donor availability, laboratory experience and legal clarity matter more than the invoice. Note that Spanish law makes gamete donation anonymous, which has real long-term implications for a donor-conceived child's ability to trace their origins — research this before deciding.

Why is Spain so strong for IVF?
Volume and donor availability. Spanish law permits compensated, anonymous donation, which produces short waiting times for donor eggs — often weeks rather than years. Laboratories are correspondingly experienced.
What does anonymous donation mean for my child?
Under Spanish law the donor cannot be identified, and your child will not be able to trace them. This differs from UK law, where donor-conceived people can access identifying information at 18. It is a permanent consequence and deserves proper thought.
How long do I need to be there?
Many Spanish clinics run a short-stay model: monitoring at home, then five to seven days in Spain for retrieval and transfer. Confirm who does your local monitoring before committing.
Is Spain worth it if it costs more?
For fertility, often yes — outcome data is published and donor waits are short. For dental or orthopedic work, Turkey or Hungary will usually give you more for your money.
