Why patients choose Mexico

Mexico is the largest medical travel destination in the Americas, serving primarily North American patients but increasingly European ones. Border cities such as Tijuana and Los Algodones dominate dental and bariatric work; Monterrey and Guadalajara handle more complex surgery.

Savings run 50 to 70 per cent against UK private rates. For European patients the flight is long — around twelve hours — so Mexico usually makes sense for procedures where the saving is large in absolute terms, or where a specific clinic relationship exists.

Very high bariatric volume

Mexican centres perform sleeve and bypass surgery at volumes few countries match, with correspondingly experienced teams.

Established dental corridor

Los Algodones and Tijuana have decades of experience with high-throughput dental work at low cost.

Short border transfers

For patients routing via the United States, hospital transfers from San Diego are routine and well organised.

Healthcare standards and regulation

Healthcare is regulated by COFEPRIS at federal level, with facility licensing and professional registration through the Secretaría de Salud. Standards vary widely between the top private hospitals and the high-volume border clinics, so the choice of specific facility matters a great deal.

Accreditation

The Consejo de Salubridad General runs the national hospital accreditation programme, and a number of larger hospitals also hold JCI. Many border dental clinics hold neither, which is not automatically disqualifying for routine work but does mean you are relying on the individual dentist's credentials rather than an institutional standard. Verify the dentist's cédula profesional.

Travel, visas and logistics

  • VisaNot required for UK or EU nationals for tourist stays
  • Flight from London11h 40m
  • Flight from Dubai16h 30m
  • Best monthsOctober to April, particularly for the northern border cities where summer heat is intense.
  • LanguageSpanish. English is standard in clinics serving international patients, especially near the US border.
  • CurrencyMexican peso (MXN). Border clinics frequently quote and accept USD.

Visa and entry rules change. Always confirm with the embassy or consulate for your own nationality rather than relying on a clinic coordinator.

Safety and what to weigh

The quality gap between the top private hospitals and the high-volume border clinics is wider in Mexico than in most destinations. Accredited hospitals in Monterrey or Guadalajara are a different proposition from a walk-in dental clinic in a border town. Both exist, both advertise, and the price difference does not always reflect the gap.

On personal safety, follow the clinic's own transfer arrangements rather than travelling independently, particularly in border cities, and check current government travel advice for the specific state. The medical districts serving international patients are well established, but the surrounding security picture varies significantly by region and changes.

Frequently asked questions

Is it safe to travel to Mexico for treatment?

The medical districts serving international patients are well established, and reputable hospitals arrange transfers directly. Follow those arrangements rather than travelling independently, and check current government advice for the specific state you are visiting.

How do I verify a dentist or surgeon?

Ask for their cédula profesional — the Mexican professional licence number — and check it on the federal register. For border dental clinics without institutional accreditation, this is your main safeguard.

Is Mexico practical for European patients?

Less so than Turkey or Poland, given the twelve-hour flight. It makes most sense where the absolute saving is large, such as bariatric surgery, or where you have a specific clinic recommendation.

Can I route through the United States?

Many patients do, transferring from San Diego to Tijuana. Note that you may need a US visa or ESTA for the transit, even if you never leave the airport area.

What about bariatric follow-up?

This is the weak point of low-cost bariatric packages anywhere, and Mexico is no exception. Confirm exactly what twelve-month follow-up consists of and how it is delivered once you are home.
